An archipelago unlike anywhere else on the planet

Socotra lies some 240 kilometres off the south-east coast of Yemen, in the Arabian Sea — close enough to the trade winds to stay green, far enough from anywhere to evolve in isolation for twenty million years.

A natural history like no other

The archipelago's long isolation produced one of the most distinctive floras on Earth. Its emblem, the dragon blood tree, bleeds red resin and crowns the highlands in umbrella-shaped forests. Beside it grow bulbous bottle trees, frankincense and a long list of plants that exist here and nowhere else. Around a third of the island's plant species — and nearly all of its reptiles — are endemic.

In 2008 Socotra was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for precisely this rarity. The people of the island, Arabic-speaking Soqotri with their own unwritten language, have lived lightly on this land for centuries, herding goats and harvesting dates, frankincense and the dragon blood resin that gives the tree its name.

Socotra is extraordinary — but it is also remote, largely off-grid, and not a place you can simply show up and improvise. Permits, vehicles, camps, water and a guide who knows the land all matter enormously to whether the island feels like a dream or an ordeal.

We are a local team, born and raised on and around the island, and we started Socotra Sun Tour for one reason: to make this place reachable, gently. We handle the logistics so you can be present for the wonder — and we run every journey in a way that protects the very thing people come to see.

You'll meet your guide on day one, and they'll be with you throughout. Our guides are born-and-raised islanders who read the land like a story — the weather, the wildlife, the histories — and share the culture behind it. Behind them is a wider team coordinating vehicles, camps, permits and provisions so that, on the ground, nothing ever feels complicated.
